Criminological Perspectives drawn from Anderson’s Street Codes, Bining_0720434_130215 When you skim the pages of The Atlantic newspaper (1994 edition) and view the article ‘The Code of the Streets’ published by author Elijah Anderson curiosity will stimulate your mind to reflect on the critical time periods and the chosen words to describe the society. The purpose of this paper is twofold: to engage readers in the theoretical arguments and to stimulate the mind to ask sociological and criminological questions regarding the information present in ‘The Code of the Streets.’ The underlying philosophy relates closely to the Chicago School of Learning emphasizing social disorganization theory, even though the author’s perspective borrows critical aspects of Social Learning Theories: Aker’s and Burgess’s social learning theory and Jeffery’s differential reinforcement theory, derived from Sutherland’s differential association theory. Aker’s and Burgess’s social learning theory emphasizes the social environment a critical component to what we learn and source of reinforcement. Behaviour is a product of past and present day experiences, which either get strengthened or altered due to schedules of consequences, the frequency and probability of a consequence. If one can predict the outcome he or she will not commit the crime.
